A recent survey conducted across Europe by the travel research company Skyscanner focused on customer reactions to airport staff - namely how friendly and helpful they were. More than 500 customer opinions were recorded to produce results for the UK and Europe in general, ranking airports with an average mark out of ten. Reactions were taken regarding staff from all over the airports, ranging from check in staff; security staff; shop keepers; and answers to general information seeking.
Belfast did well in the results, with both its airports (Belfast International and Belfast City, also called George Best) ranking in the top 5 UK airports (places 4 and 5 respectively). Both recieved praise from travellers for their friendly welcome and the easy going banter displayed by a lot of the staff, said in fact to be typical of Northern Ireland.
Amongst the other top scorers were Manchester, in 3rd place; Newcastle in 2nd; and Edinburgh, which came out at number 1.
In contrast, the top 5 worst airports included 4 of London's: Gatwick, in 4th place; Heathrow, 3rd, Standstead, 2nd; and Luton, which topped the poll as the UK's unfriendliest airport, with a score of 5.76. Birmingham took 5th place. Despite these results, a spokesperson from Skyscanner stated that overall the results of UK airports were not bad, and that whilst holiday go-ers do like a grumble, the overall customer reaction was far from terrible. Heathrow's main pit fall was the large number of inexperienced staff drafted in for the very busy London Olympic weeks.
Looking further afield, the European results were as follows:
